Camouflaged prototype gives clearest view yet of the final 2016 Miata body shape
In Japan, an enterprising Miata fan has spied what he believes to be the next Mazda MX-5 Miata, the ND generation.
Credit goes to the army of engineers who have blanketed the car in razzle-dazzle camouflage (is that houndstooth?). Previous spy shots have all been engineering mules crudely cobbled together under current Miata shells. But this latest shot is among the clearest examples of the new body: a bulbous rear end, a kick in the trunklid, and an even more sloping roof design. Do fender flares make a return? For now, it appears so.
And the ultimate Miata giveaway? It's on the Grand Touring trim's 17-inch alloy wheels.
"ND by chance?" writes our spy photographer in Japanese, posting to Instagram. "Rumors."
"Love," said another Instagrammer, "it is announced fun." Our Japanese isn't so great.
Stay tuned: We'll see the 2016 Mazda Miata in just under a month when the car debuts in Monterey, Calif. on September 3.
